These are the theories being bandied about in explanation of the rise of terrorism in the centre of the capitalist world. Mark Lynas writes in the Guardian, that *if global conflict and ecological disaster are to be avoided, the west must end its reliance on oil.* Activists from the IndyMedia center argue that the acts of terror are the *natural and logical conclusion* of global capitalism. (See: *Acts of terror sparked by global capitalism, say activists* http://nyc.indymedia.org/pdf.php3?article_id=9557) The roots of terrorism may be too complex to lend itself to just one or a few theories, but what does ring true is that the origins of conflict lie in the deprivations faced by many as a result of the excesses of a few. Few places illustrate better, the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots, than India. Even today, people in our poorest regions continue to starve to death while food rots away in godowns and *More is better* becomes the modern mantra of liberalisation. The global inequities are even more obvious when you consider that nearly 80 percent of the world's population that lives in developing countries, enjoys only 17 percent of a share of world trade. Its a fact that most people in the world have not benefited from the form of *multilateral* trading systems in place today. This makes the global institutions of capitalism - the World Bank, the IMF and the WTO, no less guilty of terrorism - but of a more insidious kind, and on a global scale. The kind of terrorism that specialises in unfair trade practices, forcing nations to deplete their resources, and causing further poverty and deprivation. The kind of terrorism that has no qualms about resorting to murder and human rights abuse to silence the voices of those who oppose their economic and political interests. There's no justification for violence and the killing of innocents. But lets hope that when the guardians of democracy claim to fight for peace and justice for all mankind, that's exactly what they intend to do. «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» Voice your opinion or start a discussion on this topic at: mailto:makingindiagreen@yahoogroups.com TAKE A GREEN POLL!
