INTO THE FIELD For years the world's largest agri-corporations have been trying to push genetic engineering as a solution to pesticide use and even world hunger. If there are fewer takers for the last argument today, it is not least because the motives of these corporations have been far from altruistic. The recent case of illegally grown Bt cotton in Gujarat has proved what environmentalists have been warning all along - that the agri-corporations (whether multinational or homegrown) do not believe in playing by the rules, and have demonstrated a consistent disregard for ethics, for consumer opinion, and even the law. Indian environmentalists voiced cautious optimism when the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests decided in June this year, to turn down Mahyco-Monsanto's application for commercialisation of Bt cotton in India, stipulating that the field tests be carried out for another season. However with the discovery of the illegal plantings of Bt cotton in Gujarat (and now also in Maharastra, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and who knows where else) that optimism has given way to anger and condemnation. The politicisation of the issue by diametrically opposed farmer's groups has only served to complicate matters. "The issue of Bt Cotton is not merely one of science, but it also has to address whether we should allow a known offender loose in India," states Nityanand Jayaraman, Greenpeace India campaigner, referring to the detection of illegal GM Monsanto corn in Argentina earlier this year. While agri-corporations, such as Monsanto, proclaim the benefits of pest-resistant GE-crops as saving farmers time and money, the realities in the field are proving to be quite different. Incidents of pest resistance to Bt cotton have been reported in farmer's fields in the United States and Australia. Scientists and environmentalists warn that trials of Bt cotton risk environmental damage and the loss of the world's most important biological pesticide. Genetically modified crops are riskier than they should be, says a committee of experts advising the British government. But there are ways to make them safer! Refer: http://www.newscientist.com/hottopics/gm/gm.jsp?id=22620200 As mentioned in an earlier editorial (Making India Green, July 2001) biotech companies can do a lot more to ensure the safety of genetically modified crops. The policy of *Contaminate and Conquer,* will not benefit agri-corporations like Monsanto and NavBharat Seeds for long. On the contrary, it will backfire, resulting in legal action (as has already been initiated against Navbharat Seeds), compensation to farmers whose fields have been contaminated by cross-pollination, and consumers who have been affected by allergic reactions - imagined or otherwise - due to contaminated foods (as in the recent Starlink corn case). In the long run, it will affect them even more in the form of bad publicity and consumer wariness against untested technologies and unsafe practices. But more importantly and perhaps most damaging of all, these illegal practices are creating a fear of biotechnology - a technology that holds great promise for good, when used with the proper measures of safety. Unfortunately, in the absence of public debate and choice over the technologies that dictate what we use and consume, we can only hope that we won't have to throw out the baby with the bathwater. «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» BT COTTON IN THE NEWS: The Gen(i)e Is Out Again Outlook India (November 5, 2001) http://www.linkcounter.com/go.php?linkid=193048 Indian farmers win reprieve on banned cotton crop Reuters (November 1, 2001) http://www.planetark.org/avantgo/dailynewsstory.cfm?newsid=13053 PRESS RELEASES: Greenpeace demands containment of genetic pollution in Gujarat Greenpeace (November 1, 2001) http://www.makingindiagreen.org/pr38.htm Farmers Unions resolve to fight illegal Bt planting RFSTE (November 1, 2001) http://www.makingindiagreen.org/pr39.htm ON THE WEBSITE More about the Indian campaign against GM Crops: http://www.makingindiagreen.org/camgefood.htm The Genie in the Test Tube Making India Green (February 2001) http://www.makingindiagreen.org/genie.htm Fire in the Cotton Fields Making India Green (May 2001) http://www.makingindiagreen.org/btcotton.htm «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» Voice your opinion or start a discussion on this topic at: mailto:makingindiagreen@yahoogroups.com TAKE A GREEN POLL! New clothes, sweets, firecrackers - the works.... Do you know that the joy we derive from crackers is founded on the sacrifice of the lives of young innocent children? Don't know what I'm talking about? Read on.... We celebrate Diwali by bursting crackers - when thousands of children, who make these crackers, don't even know what this celebration stands for. They work in the factories from dawn to dusk where every second is a risk to their lives. Here are a few facts - **Children start working at the age of seven, especially girls and the maximum earning is around Rs. 15 per day. **The average age of the child, risking his life to make crackers for your entertainment is 10 years. Don't you think he should be in school? Here are a few incidents that highlight the danger that the children are exposed to every second of their lives: ***5 Girls charred to death in Rajkot firecracker blaze including a minor, employed at the Shri Ram Fireworks on Bhavnagar road were killed on December 1, 1998, when the room in which they were making firecrackers caught fire. The girls who were preparing *thread bombs* had no chance of escape due to the rapid spread of the fire, which actually blew off the rooftop. ***In a fireworks factory On May 24 in Rohtak, Haryana, eight children were charred to death in a blast at Krishna Fireworks factory. The factory owner was testing the crackers when one of them burst and caused a series of blasts, which blew off the whole tin shed. ***In a gruesome incident, 22 children were killed in an explosion in a fireworks factory in West Bengal, Haturia, a remote village in Howrah district. The M&P Fireworks, one of the biggest *unlicensed fireworks factories* in the state employ a large number of children. In the process of making explosives, the children were trying to push a drum, which had more than 50 kg explosive mixture. The drum exploded after pressure built up inside, killing all those inside the factory. ***A factory at Chellapath village went up in flames. Six children, who were stuffing crackers with sulphur powder, were charred to death. WHAT CAN YOU OR I DO? Feel sympathy for these unfortunate children? That is not enough- We have to move beyond. To begin with, you can celebrate Diwali untouched by Child Labor. Say *NO* to firecrackers and prevent the cruel death of hundreds of children. It's up to you and me to make a difference to their lives.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ See what you can do to Help End Chid Labour: http://www.makingindiagreen.org/childlabour.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ «»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«» This green tip was contributed by Ani and Monica Chopra.
