I wish to make a personal protest with regard to genetically modified food crops. I question their ethics and safety. These products have been distributed to an unsuspecting population worldwide and I object to being made a guinea pig without having been given a choice as to what I purchase for myself or my family. Genetic technology, in its present form, is unpredictable and cannot be sufficiently controlled to guarantee safety. We should act before there is a pollution problem. We should delay the commercial development of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for a period of say five or ten years, to allow for debate and for better testing. We should not be releasing them into the wild until much more scientific studies have been done. We need laws to regulate the release of genetically-engineered organisms into the environment. The biotechnology industry should be regulated by an independent body and one that has teeth. Safety should be our prime concern. Adequate buffer zones should exist around all GM crops to prevent "genetic pollution" of neighbouring plants. All genetically modified food products must be fully labelled. It would be prudent to internationally regulate GMOs before many more countries become involved in their production. We need changes in Patent laws which allow blatant piracy of our biodiversity. A small number of companies should not be allowed to dominate the food market with this very powerful and potentially devastating technology.
